About Grace Chai

Hello, and welcome to my journalism website!

I’m a student studying journalism and sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Currently, I work as a communications assistant for the Commonwealth Honors College. I also serve on the Audio/Visual staff for the UMass Minuteman Marching band, photographing the Hoop and Ice band at basketball and hockey games. I will be photographing the marching band in the fall.

I began my foray into photojournalism in the fall of 2024 with my visual storytelling class, and I became enamored with the concept of capturing a story through visuals since then. I am now taking a photojournalism class and am taking photos for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, often snapping shots for articles that I write.

I have previously interned at the Harvard Press, a local newspaper based in Harvard, MA. There, I worked closely with editors to develop skills like interviewing, communicated with local government and editing in accordance with AP Style. I have also worked as an intern with ENSPIRE Magazine, where I produced over twenty articles, working with press releases and communicating with publicists.

I have experience in multiple beats, including news, feature writing, arts and column writing. I have honed these skills through my time at school newspapers like the Massachusetts Daily Collegian and at my internships.

I am looking for opportunities to gain on-the-ground reporting experience and hone my writing and photography skills.
