About Grace Chai

Welcome to my journalism website!

I’m a senior studying journalism and sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I am passionate about covering politics and policy as well as higher education.

I began my foray into photojournalism in the fall of 2024 with my visual storytelling class, and I became enamored with the concept of capturing a story through visuals since then.

As a staff writer for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, I have written articles covering protests, campus events and the university's response to federal actions and taken photos to go with those stories. I have also written for the Collegian's opinion and arts and culture sections. In addition to writing, I am interested in storytelling through multimedia. While taking a photojournalism class, I completed an original photo essay and published photos to accompany several of my news stories.

Outside of school, I have interned and published pieces at media outlets such as the Daily Hampshire Gazette, the Harvard Press and ENSPIRE Magazine. I also completed an 8-week undergraduate research assistantship with Dr. Heesoo Jang this year, helping with a project on AI literacy. During this assistantship, I explored the importance of AI literacy across disciplines and presented preliminary findings at the SBS Undergraduate Research Symposium.

I aim to convey stories about how policy affects the community --- whether it is school policy, state policy or federal policy --- and make information accessible to all.
